Llama and Alpaca Facts

   The Incas

Card 2

Llamas were very important to the Incas of South America. They kept them for their fibre to make clothes; they ate their meat; and they sacrificed them to their gods.

As the paths and tracks in the high Andes mountains were so rough and steep, it was impossible to carry things in carts. Everything which needed to be carried was strapped onto a llama's back.

Llama herders, the people who looked after the llamas, were important people.

In some of the more-mountainous parts of South America, llamas are still used to carry goods across the mountains. And some people still sacrifice llamas to keep their gods happy.
